First Year:

Commemorative Space

Our first project was to create a commemorative space in memorial to either the jute industry or the tay bridge disaster. I chose the tay bridge disaster and created a contemporary walkway to represent the journey of the night of the disaster, calm at first, then catastrophic, and then all calm again. It was less literal and more of an experience.

Journey Box
This project took inspiration from a book of your choice, in my case my childhood favourite 'Heidi'. We had a  cube to design within to create a space for the public to enter and to lead to reading area. My design was split into 2 halfs, representing the 3 different places Heidi spends her life in the book, the mountain world, the middle world and the city. Both were designed to recreate the feelings Heidi had felt in each part.

Domestic Dwelling
I created a temporary stay orphanage/foster home, designed for street children in Mexico but can easily be used in any country. I created 3 separate domestic spaces, one for living and playing, one for education and health, and one for carers to sleep, eat and live, in order for them to be close to the children at all times. The sizes of the dwelling, which we were given were small, which caused some bother as I felt it was best I allowed sleeping space for as many children as possible whilst still being sensitive to the children's needs. I also felt it was important they had their own private space as although their stay was short they should still be happy and comfortable in their surroundings.

Second Year:

Juteopolis
This was our first group project and we were asked to design an exhibition about the Jute industry, one of the main industries that built Dundee to be what it is today. With three people in the group we all had very different ideas on what the exhibition should be, and if left alone i probably would have gone along a more traditional route however we created more of a 'space'. The idea was that it was a place people could go to reflect on the jute industry, share stories and learn. The design is simple and all about atmosphere rather than an overload of information as we felt this is already plentiful in Dundee.

DesigningMaking

This was another group project. Our brief was to design a piece of furniture which reflected contemporary living. Our main idea was something which was flexible as we felt change is something that most users would want, in order to customise to their needs. After some research we decided to design a chair and when focusing on this we also realised humans fidget a lot. Therefore we came up with the idea of a rocking chair, the rocking movement a natural soothing method. We wanted to have a modern twist to the chair so added a kind of sidetable/arm rest. To add a little humour to the chair we used bungee to keep books or magazines tightly in place, and also to add a splash of colour to the over all design.
